Bojt, Egri Csillag Superior

WHY WE LOVE THIS WINE
Egri Csillag is essentially the white equivalent of the Bikavér (Bull’s Blood) blend. This very popular dry white is a blend of Olaszrizling (Welschriesling), Sauvignon Blanc, Leányka and Muscat Ottonel, with no one grape dominating and the result being greater than the sum of the parts. Egri Csillag must be composed of at least 50 percent of the Carpathian basin grape varieties, while local Hungarian aromatic varieties are limited to a maximum of 30 percent. This Egri Csillag is from the so-called ‘Superior’ category, which means that it has had a bit of oak aging, yet retains its freshness, crispiness, and fruitiness.
ABOUT THE WINERY
László and Éva Böjt received a small vineyard plot as compensation after the fall of Communism, using it to found this winery in 1993. Located in the village of Ostoros, four kilometers from the city of Eger in northeastern Hungary, this is a relatively cool climate, and partially volcanic, wine region. Since 2016 Gergő and Boglárka, their son and daughter, have taken the lead and have been running the winery, producing outstanding wines which are great representations of the Eger terroir. The much travelled and internationally experienced Gergő makes the wine, and Boglárka sells it.
